Travel Costs

Fuel Cost Calculator

Work out what a journey will cost in fuel before you set off. Enter the distance, your vehicle's mileage, and the fuel price you pay, and you will see the litres used, the total cost, and the cost per kilometre — for a one-way trip or a return trip.

No live data. Every rate, price, and percentage on this page is entered by you. Nothing is fetched from a bank, a market, or a government source, and no figure here is presented as a live or official rate.

The distance for one leg of the journey, in kilometres.

How many kilometres your vehicle travels on one litre of fuel.

Enter the price you pay at the pump. No live petrol or diesel price is used.

Tick this if you are travelling there and back on the same route.

You will see your answer with the figures shown, so you can check it.

How it works

  1. Enter the one-way distance in kilometres, your vehicle's mileage in kilometres per litre, and the fuel price per litre you pay.
  2. Tick "Return trip" if you are travelling there and back — the distance is doubled, and the cost per kilometre stays the same.
  3. You see the litres used, the total cost, and the cost per kilometre, with the working shown so you can check it.

Fuel prices change often, so always enter the price at the pump on the day you travel. The calculator never uses a stored or live petrol price.

Formula

Litres used = Total distance (km) ÷ Mileage (km per litre)

Total cost = Litres used × Fuel price per litre (Rs)

Cost per km = Total cost ÷ Total distance (km)

For a return trip, total distance is twice the one-way distance. A Percentage Calculator can help if you want to work out how much of a budget the trip uses.

Worked example

Example: A 300 km journey at 12 km per litre uses 300 ÷ 12 = 25 litres. At Rs 270 per litre, the trip costs 25 × Rs 270 = Rs 6,750, which is Rs 22.50 per kilometre. The same journey as a return trip covers 600 km, uses 50 litres, and costs Rs 13,500.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out the fuel cost of a trip?

Divide the total distance by your mileage to get the litres used, then multiply by the fuel price per litre. For example, 300 km at 12 km per litre uses 25 litres, and at Rs 270 per litre the trip costs Rs 6,750.

What mileage should I enter?

Enter your vehicle's real average in kilometres per litre — the figure you get from your own fill-ups, not only the brochure figure. City driving usually gives fewer kilometres per litre than highway driving.

Does the calculator use a live petrol price?

No. Fuel prices change often, so you enter the price you pay at the pump. No live, stored, or official petrol or diesel price is used, and no price is shown as current.

How does the return trip option work?

It doubles the one-way distance. A 300 km one-way journey becomes 600 km in total, uses twice the fuel, and costs twice as much, while the cost per kilometre stays the same.

How is the cost per kilometre worked out?

Divide the total fuel cost by the distance. For the example above, Rs 6,750 for 300 km is Rs 22.50 per kilometre. The figure is the same for a return trip, because both the cost and the distance double.

Why does my real fuel cost differ from the result?

Traffic, load, air conditioning, tyre pressure, and driving style all change fuel use. The result assumes the mileage you entered stays the same for the whole journey, so treat it as an estimate for planning.
