Percentage Calculator

Work out what X% of a number is, what percent one number is of another, or a percentage increase or decrease — with the formula shown using your numbers, so you can check every answer. Results are plain arithmetic: plain numbers or percentages, with no currency assumed.

Choose what to calculate

Enter a percentage. It can be more than 100.

Negative numbers are allowed. Results keep their sign.

Enter the number to take a percentage of.

Formula: X% of Y = ?

Your result will appear here.

Enter your details to see your result.

You’ll see your answer with the formula shown, so you can check it.

How it works

  1. Choose what you want to work out: a percentage of a number, what percentage one number is of another, or a percentage increase or decrease.
  2. Enter the two numbers. Negative numbers are allowed, and a percentage can be more than 100. The formula preview updates as you switch modes, and your numbers stay in place when you switch.
  3. You see the answer with the formula and your numbers filled in, so you can check it. In percentage-change mode you also see the difference and whether it is an increase, a decrease, or no change.

Result = (X ÷ 100) × Y

Result % = (X ÷ Y) × 100

Change % = ((To − From) ÷ From) × 100. Percentage change from zero is undefined, so the starting number cannot be 0. In the second mode, the second number cannot be 0, because you cannot divide by zero.

Worked examples

Example 1: What is 15% of 2,000? (15 ÷ 100) × 2,000 = 300. The answer is 300.

Example 2: From 800 to 1,000: ((1,000 − 800) ÷ 800) × 100 = +25.00%, an increase, with a difference of +200.

Frequently asked questions

What is X% of a number?

Multiply the number by X and divide by 100. For example, 15% of 2,000 is 300. Choose the “X% of Y” mode, enter X and Y, and the formula with your numbers is shown with the answer.

How do I calculate percentage increase or decrease?

Subtract the starting number from the new number, divide by the starting number, and multiply by 100. For example, going from 800 to 1,000 is a +25.00% increase, with a difference of +200. The starting number cannot be 0, because percentage change from zero is undefined.

How do I work out what percent one number is of another?

Divide the first number by the second number and multiply by 100. For example, 450 is 25.00% of 1,800. Choose the “X is what % of Y?” mode. The second number cannot be 0, because you cannot divide by zero.

Can I see the formula with my numbers?

Yes. The formula preview under the fields updates as you type, and the result shows the same formula with your numbers filled in — for example, 15% of 2,000 = 300. The formula is generated from your inputs; it is never a typed example.
